Sebastian Baverstam performed on From the Top's radio show with the Sarquindi Quartet at the age of 16 and then again with Youth Philharmonic Orchestra a year later, but back when he was 10-years-old, Sebastian was a solo performer on one of From the Top's very first episodes! Check out his profile from way back then:
Sebastian Baverstam is not your ordinary 10-year old. In addition to being an amazing cellist, he is also a composer. "I am currently working on a string quartet," says Sebastian, "and I've also written music to accompany a book called The Child's Garden of Verses." Sebastian fell in love with the cello when he was only two years old. "There was a man at my church playing Bach on the cello, and my mom says that I just sat there for an entire half-hour, mesmerized by the cello. When it was time to go, I guess I didn't want to and started to cry," he recalls. After a whole two years of waiting, Sebastian finally got a quarter-sized cello at the age of four, and it's been a whirlwind ever since. He's played backstage for Yo-Yo Ma, at Sculler's (a top-rated jazz club in Boston) and with many classical groups.
Another interesting part of Sebastian's life is his family's involvement in his music. They're not just supportive, they are active participants. His brothers Kristian and Oliver, his sister Madeleine and his mom all play instruments. They have a chamber music group called the Baverstam Chamber Players, and they play concerts all over the world, from Boston to more exotic locations, like Sweden. "We played in a cathedral in Upsala, Sweden, and it was just amazing," he remembers with a smile. "It echoed so much at first, but after a while I got used to it."
