English 12 - The Contrast of two Characters in "The Interprater of Maladies"
The similarity and difference between Mr.Kapasi and Mina
In "Interpreter of Maladies," Mr. Kapasi and Mina both come from same ethnic group – Indian; they differ in cultural aspects because Mina and her husband are the second generation Indian-Ameran, while Mr.Das is local Indian tourist guide. On the other hand, many things Kapasi and Mina share in common are their lonely feelings and marital problems.
There are several examples of noticeable cultural difference between Mina and Mr.Kapasi. At the first moment they meet each other. “When he’d introduced himself, Mr. Capasi has (had) pressed his palms together in greeting”; on the contrast, Mr. Das has (had) squeezed hands like an AmricanMina “has (had) flexed one side of her mouth, smiling dutifully”. (Page 84, end of 3rd paragraph). Moreover, Mr. Kapasi becomes curious about the couple who looks Indian, yet dress like American tourists, carry water bottle, and speak with an American accent he had heard many times on American TV shows,

开学第一天
开学啦，啦啦啦~
暑假的第一个礼拜 - 轻松，第二个礼拜 - 无聊，第三个礼拜 - 沮丧，身体变着法子不舒服，精神就像一盏油灯，慢慢地暗下去暗下去。看了算命的网站，说：“这个星座和生肖的人，喜欢千变万化，不厌其烦和朝令夕改 - 这些是其生活中不可少的调味品，因为这个星座和生肖的人，最不喜欢的就是单调而索然无味的生活。”算得还真准~
可不，今天上学的路上，心情特别舒畅，满目望出去全是愉悦的景色。

住过的地方- 郊区厂宿舍(上) 1969~1973
一九六八年接到工作录取的通知後，马上和几个女伴一起去看“厂门面”。至于生产什么我的脑子想也没想过，厂门面是天大的事情。上海自动化仪表厂坐落在虹口区那条臭臭的苏州河边，门面又破又小，和它英俊的名字毫无关系，和书本上“高大的烟囱，隆隆作响的机器”也完全没关系。
我们这一届18个学徒，只有两个分配到磨具车间，据说因为我们来自重点中学。可是那个磨具车间和总厂有五分钟路步行距离，且隔壁是豆腐坊。那豆腐坊很大，国营的，应该不会像如今那样小作坊放置某些不该放的原料。

张先生携妻儿从上海技术移民加拿大两年了，还租住在房东蒋叔的土屋里。每每回首，总怀疑当初的决策是否错了。IT行业风光不再，大温地区除了林业矿业没有更多的空间足以使工控软件编程的他得以发挥专长。加之每年新移民涌入，雇用市场竞争激烈。原先的小公司倒闭后，他在家已呆了四个月之久，虽説加拿大社会保险制度完善，但一个大男人靠失业金和老婆在杂货店打工的小钱度日，心情甚是烦躁。
一晚张先生欲外出散心，见蒋叔夫妇坐在花园长椅上。加拿大人际关系不像上海弄堂那么无私密性，一般点头微笑而已，“吃过吗”的问候也随乡入俗省略了。不过这一次，蒋婶盛情邀请张先生坐一会，自然就聊起了第一代移民的不易。
