"Up the Yangtze"

This weekend I saw two movies, one is the famous “the Dark Knight”, the new batman movie. Although it smashed a lot of box office records, what with an earning of 155.3 million dollars in its opening weekend (last Friday), I think it is so so.
Compare with that, I like the other movie better.” Up the Yangtze”. It filmed as documentary style, talking about the Three Gorges Dam project’s influence to Chinese common people.
The story is on a luxury cruise boat. One of the "Three Gorges Farewell Tour". The two main characters are workers on the boat. A 16 year-old girl, Yu Shui, as the oldest child of a poor peasant family from FengDu, was forced by her parents to work on the boat and subsidize her family. Another 19 year-old boy, Jerry, is from ChongQing. He took a job on the boat to prove his capability. He is a typical one-child in the family, self-consistent and over confident. The Dam project to them is totally different. Yu Shui's home will be drowned in the river, their life will be even tougher. Jerry, on the other hand, thinks the boat will give him more chances to explore the world and earn more money from foreign tourists.
The movie starts with the joke. A Chinese leader and an American Leader sit in a car. When they hit an intersection, the right is showing “Capitalism” and the left is showing “Socialism”. The American leader said, “let’s turn right.”; The Chinese leader think a while and say, “OK, let’s turn right, but please set indicator of turn left!’
The director is a Chinese-Canadian. I can feel he know the Chinese culture, but he dislikes some Chinese rules. For example, when the manager trains their new stuff, he told them, “Don’t compare Canada with the United States” and “Don’t ask question about Québec’s independence”. When a interpreter bring many foreign tourists to the new apartments for the Three Gorges immigrants, he told them all immigrants are very lucky and happy. But from other scenes, you can see people are fighting about moving, old generation don’t want to move. They are suffering.
When we see that Yu Shui’s father carrying the huge cabinet on his back and climbing the Dam, K said “it’s amazing!” I told him, “They have no choice.” Although the furniture is so crap, that is still important to their family.
Yu Shui makes me recall my maid in China. She’s from Gan Su province. She is also the oldest Child of her family. She was asked to work outside of her home town when she was only 14 year-old. She never goes to school and don’t know how to read and write. Her parents have four daughters. Two of them are working to support the family. Some time I think their parents are really irresponsible. This is China’s reality.
